HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The 2nd annual Kimchi Festival was held Saturday in Makiki District Park Field — a cultural celebration of the Korean staple of spicy fermented vegetables.
David Suh, president of the United Korean Association of Hawaii, and Yon Ok Moriyama, owner of New Hyung Je Yakiniku, joined HNN’s Sunrise to show how traditional kimchi is made and talk about the free, family-friendly event.
The festival features kimchi food booths, tasting, demonstrations, keiki zone and live music, including a string quartet with members of the Honolulu Symphony and performances by Arang GoGo JangGu, Halla Huhm Dance Studio, Moanalua Middle School Orchestra, Hawaii Dance Bomb, and other local artists. There will also be a talent contest with cash prizes.
Kimchi is usually made with napa cabbage and is tangy, crunchy and full of probiotics, offering a number of health benefits.
New Hyung Je is among the participating food vendors and will serve spicy pork spare rib, bulgogi, BBQ chicken, kimchi fried rice, kimbap, chives pancakes and its traditional kimchi. Other vendors include 88 Mart, Eagle Cafe, Jagalchi, Khan Skewer, Onaona and Sabal.
Free event parking is at Makiki District Park, 1527 Ke’eaumoku, and at Hawaii Christ Church at 1639 Ke’eaumoku.
This year marks the 121th anniversary of the arrival of the first Korean immigrants in Hawaii.
